Who was Mother Astrup?

Ebba Astrup was born in Barcelona in 1863, as the daughter of a wealthy Norwegian businessman. He moved his company to Stockholm the following year, so Ebba spent her childhood and upbringing there. At the age of 18, she was sent to Lausanne in Switzerland, where she attended a boarding school for young, wealthy girls.

After this, she traveled to London to study languages, and there she met Ole Richter for the first time, who was from Rostad in Inderøy, Nord-Trøndelag. He was a trained lawyer and served as a member of the Norwegian parliament for many years. They got secretly engaged in 1888, after his wife passed away. He was the Norwegian prime minister in Stockholm from 1884-88 during the union with Sweden, but after dramatic events, he took his own life in 1888, before they could get married. After this, Ebba had a wandering life, but always with a focus on helping others, such as children and youth from itinerant families.

In 1899, Ole Richter's farm was purchased to become a children's home/orphanage, and Ebba Astrup became the manager there. She was often called Mother Rostad, too.

She knitted scarves for all the children at the children's home using this special technique, often incorporating the children's names into the pattern.

This knitting technique is on the Norwegian Handcraft Association's "Red List", which means that this is an old and important technique they want to preserve by passing it on.

In this course, you will receive patterns and instructions for both scarves and wrist warmers - and most importantly: You will learn how to create a pattern in Mamma Astrup's Knitting Technique yourself!

This knitting project works well with yarn from your stash! We recommend using yarn that has a gauge of 24 stitches to 4 inches, and needles EUR 3,0mm or 3,5 mm, US 3,0 or 4,0
